Formation
Angelite is a pale blue to blue-gray variety of anhydrite, a calcium sulfate mineral. Anhydrite commonly forms in evaporite deposits as mineral-rich water evaporates and can also develop when gypsum loses the water held within its crystal structure. The classic Peruvian Angelite formed somewhat differently, as sulfate-rich solutions reacted with limestone and converted calcite into massive anhydrite. Angelite typically occurs as compact, fine-grained or massive material rather than sharp, well-defined crystal points. In the well-known Peruvian material, its distinctive soft blue color has been linked to trace amounts of ferrous iron.
Colors
Its signature color ranges from soft pale blue to blue-gray, often described as powder blue or cloudy sky blue. Its appearance is usually gentle and muted rather than vivid, with a soft, cloudy quality that gives the stone its distinctive look. Some pieces may show natural white or gray areas, subtle veining, or variations in color and pattern, making each stone slightly different.
Origin
Angelite is most strongly associated with Peru, particularly the Lima region, where this distinctive blue-gray anhydrite was introduced to the gemstone and crystal trade under the name Angelite in the late 1980s. Similar pale blue anhydrite also occurs in other countries, including Mexico, Germany, and the United States, and some of this material may also be sold as Angelite in the crystal trade. Peru, however, remains the classic and best-known source of the stone.
History
Anhydrite was first documented in Austria in 1794, although the mineral was initially known by a different name. The name “Anhydrite” was adopted in the early 19th century and comes from the Greek word “anhydros,” meaning “without water,” referring to the mineral’s water-free composition.
The name “Angelite” appeared much later as a modern trade and metaphysical name for the soft blue-gray anhydrite from Peru. The material became popular for polished stones, carvings, jewelry, and decorative objects, while its spiritual identity developed largely through contemporary New Age and crystal practices.

Cleansing & Care for Angelite
Angelite is a soft and delicate stone, so gentle handling helps preserve its surface and natural finish.
Physical Care:
Clean gently with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Avoid rubbing the surface, as the stone can scratch easily.
Avoid:
Water immersion, saltwater, harsh chemicals, prolonged moisture, steam or ultrasonic cleaning, and abrasive surfaces. Angelite is a form of anhydrite, which can gradually absorb moisture and alter toward gypsum.
Energetic Cleansing & Charging:
Cleanse Angelite with smoke, sound, Selenite, Clear Quartz, or intention. Recharge it with moonlight, Clear Quartz, Selenite, or focused intention.
Angelite pairs beautifully with crystals that complement its peaceful, communicative, and spiritually focused energy. Explore stones that deepen calm, support clear expression, and enhance intuition and higher awareness.
