Formation

Onyx is a type of chalcedony, which is a form of quartz. This beautiful, typically black stone is formed when silica is deposited in lava gas cavities. This process results in the distinctive bands or layers in onyx. These layers are formed in cold water solutions, often in the cavities of volcanic rock. The silica that makes up onyx is deposited in these cavities in concentric bands. Over time, these bands build upon each other, creating the layered appearance onyx is known for.

Iranian onyx is also highly regarded for its unique color patterns and veining.
