Moonstone

Contents List

Moonstone, a gemstone enveloped in mystique, is renowned for its ethereal glow and adularescence, displaying a pearly, opalescent sheen that shifts with the angle of light. This stone symbolizes inner growth, strength, and emotional balance, often associated with feminine energy and the moon’s cycles.

Formation

Moonstone is a variety of the feldspar-group mineral orthoclase. It forms through the intergrowth of two feldspar species, orthoclase and albite. These minerals are initially intermingled, but as the newly formed mineral cools, the intergrowth of albite and orthoclase separates into stacked, alternating layers. Light reflecting from these microscopic layers produces a phenomenon known as adularescence, which gives moonstone its characteristic moon-like glow. Typically found in shades of white to blue, moonstone forms in pegmatite rocks and is often associated with hydrothermal activity.

Color

Moonstone primarily exhibits a base color that ranges from colorless to a soft, milky white. It’s famously known for its adularescence, a mesmerizing, billowy light play that often gives off a blue or silvery sheen, moving across the stone’s surface as it catches the light. Some moonstones may also display hints of peach, gray, or a delicate, pale blue, adding to their mysterious and dreamlike quality. This subtle and dynamic interplay of light and color, reminiscent of moonlight, gives the moonstone its characteristic and captivating allure.

Origins

Moonstone is relatively common but high-quality specimens are more rare. This gemstone typically forms in igneous and metamorphic rocks, often in regions with a history of volcanic activity or significant geological changes.

While found in several countries, including Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, Burma (Myanmar), Australia and the United States, moonstone’s occurrence is linked to specific geological environments.  Sri Lanka is considered to be the primary source of high-quality moonstone.

History

Moonstone has a long and rich history that spans many cultures and civilizations. Its discovery dates back to ancient civilizations, where it was revered for its appearance, reminiscent of the moon. The name “moonstone” itself is relatively modern and reflects this association with the lunar qualities observed in its shimmer.

The ancient Romans also believed that moonstone was formed from solidified rays of the moon, a belief that contributed to its mystical aura. Moonstone was seen as a sacred stone in India for centuries, where it is believed to promote emotional balance and spiritual insight.
